About this day out
West Pit local nature reserve is a former quarry and now a Site of Special Scientific Interest, notable for the rare moon carrot and its undulating terrain, unique in Cambridge's usually flat landscape. Visitors can walk through mature woodland up to chalk grassland at the top of the hill, which offers a great view of the city. The reserve is home to chalk grassland plants, butterflies, solitary bees, clearwinged moths, and woodland birds such as song thrushes, great spotted woodpeckers and tree creepers.
