The experience

About this day out

Thorley Wash is a 13-hectare wetland nature reserve south of Bishop's Stortford near Spellbrook, nestled between the River Stort navigation and the Stort backwater. This SSSI-designated reserve is home to a rich variety of wildflowers such as Ragged Robin and Marsh Marigold, and water voles flourish there following a successful 2015 reintroduction programme. It is a paradise for birdwatchers, with birds such as Whitethroat, Blackcap and Wren thriving in the scrubby margins.
