Outside the fox proof fence, Slimbridge's nature reserve is a wild area of over 325 hectares managed by wardens, stretching from the grasslands to the shores of the Severn estuary. It provides shelter and food for flocks of swans, geese and ducks in winter, when it is home to up to 35,000 wildfowl, and is an ideal breeding ground for waders in summer. Its wetlands have international protection as a Site of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSI), a Ramsar site and a Special Protection Area.
