Siccar Point is a coastal promontory at Cockburnspath, Berwickshire, in the Scottish Borders, Scotland, that displays in three dimensions a spectacular angular unconformity with Upper Devonian beds resting discordantly on folded, near-vertical Lower Palaeozoic (early Silurian) strata. It was here that James Hutton found empirical evidence for cycles of deposition, folding, and further deposition, supporting his Theory of the Earth and the concept of 'deep time' and the great antiquity of the Earth. The site is of great historical importance in the development of geoscience.
