About this day out
Newport Castle is the final remains of a significant 14th-century waterfront fortress, built to replace an earlier motte-and-bailey castle close to the cathedral on Stow Hill. Its curtain wall was originally surrounded by a deep moat filled with water at high tide, a key benefit of its riverside location. Though largely swallowed up by the modern city, its central tower with water dock and two flanking towers can be viewed from the bridge across the River Usk.

- Terrain Level 2 – Easy. The monument is viewed externally from outside the main entrance and from the bridge across the River Usk, which offers a view of the castle's riverside profile. There is a narrow pavement leading to and from the castle, and a pedestrian paved section serving the pedestrian underpass entrance.
- Parking
- No designated parking for this site. The monument is adjacent to a busy main road; rail access is via Newport station in the town centre, and NCN Route No. 47 is on route for cyclists.
- Dogs
- Yes – dogs on short leads are welcome to access ground floor levels of the site; do not allow dogs to eat any vegetation, as some wild plants may be poisonous.
