About this day out
Milkwellburn Wood is Durham Wildlife Trust's largest woodland, located in the Derwent Valley near Blackhall Mill. The 85-hectare former ancient semi-natural oak wood is undergoing PAWS restoration, with conifers gradually being removed so native woodland can re-establish. Streams and springs support a rich moss and fern community, and the site is home to ground flora such as bluebell, primrose, and broad-leaved helleborine, plus birds including tawny owl, woodcock, and red kite.

- Terrain: Easy. There is an excellent network of surfaced tracks within the woodland providing access for wheelchairs and pushchairs via the southern entrance. Free guided tours for those with additional needs and their carers can be arranged through Durham Wildlife Trust.
- Parking
- Limited parking is available at South View via the unsurfaced road from the end of River View in Blackhall Mill; alternatively there is some parking at Whinney Leas in Chopwell Village. Parking at Whittonstall Road is recommended if also visiting Chopwell Meadows.
