The Major Oak is England's most famous tree, an English (pedunculate) oak in Sherwood Forest just north of Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire, estimated to be 800-1,000 years old. It has a waistline of 35 ft, a height of 52 feet, an estimated weight of 23 tons, and legend has it that Robin Hood hid from his enemies inside its hollow trunk. The tree draws over 600,000 visitors a year and is reached by a 15-minute walk along a footpath.
