The experience

About this day out

Work began on Ha'penny Pier in 1852 and it opened on 2 July 1853, named after the ½d toll charged. The pier's ticket office, a charming example of late 19th century architecture, now houses the Harwich Visitor Information Centre operated by the Harwich Society, which includes the free 'Harwich and the New World' exhibition. The pier also accommodates a café, a seafood kiosk, and shower facilities for visiting yacht crews.
