About this day out

The Castle Chare fountain is a 19th century water fountain in Bishop Auckland, erected in 1873 by the Temperance Society, a movement against alcohol. It has been returned to its former glory through the town's Heritage Action Zone, funded by Durham County Council and Historic England, with a new interpretation board placed close by. The fountain, which is no longer operational, was aimed at animals as well as people.
